Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country, your family, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.
I will bless them who bless you and curse him who curses you, and in you all families of the earth will be blessed.” GENESIS 12:1-3 MEV
This is the Abrahamic Blessing. God promises Abraham that he will become a great nation and that this nation will be a blessing in the earth that will touch and bless every family.
For the purpose of my message I want to zero in on verse 3: “I will bless them who bless you and curse him who curses you.”
Despite the best efforts of many who want to mangle this into meaning some kind of voodoo on behalf of the modern State of Israel, this is actually a promise to Abraham and his seed.
Romans 9:7,8 tells us that the physical descendants of Abraham are not counted as the children of God nor are they Abraham’s seed. This promise – that people who curse Abraham (and his seed) are literally stepping into a curse themselves – is clearly for those who are blessed with Abraham.
Now, who are these people? The answer is in Galatians chapter 3:-
Therefore know that those who are of faith are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel in advance to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” So then those who are of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. GALATIANS 3:7-9 MEV
The people who are blessed with faithful Abraham are those of faith. Twice this is emphasised in this passage. This is referring to what we would call the Christian faith i.e. belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.
Note here also the reference to the Gentiles or “nations” to be accurate.
In fact, Jesus died to get the Abrahamic Blessing – including the serious admonition to those who would curse or bad mouth the people upon whom this Blessing rested – on the Gentiles (Galatians 3:13,14).
The seed of Abraham are those who are in Christ. Christians are the people it is dangerous to speak ill of! Those who are in Christ are the seed of Abraham and the inheritors of the Abrahamic Blessing (Galatians 3:29).
Christians are dangerous people to know.
For the nation and kingdom that will not serve you shall perish, and those nations shall be utterly destroyed. ISAIAH 60:12 MEV
This promise of God to the people of God living in the isles and coastlands of the earth in the last days is clearly a word for the Christian era. Bill Johnson believes Isaiah 60 is a powerful word to the church at this time. I concur with this. It is one of the passages I teach on a good deal.
This verse in Isaiah is a reiteration of the promise to Abraham that God Himself has doomed those who oppose His people. It would be wrong to see this as cruel of the Lord; in fact, the warning itself is proof of His mercy.
Be careful who you bad mouth, particularly in these days of social media. Social media platforms amplify the reach of our voice, which makes it imperative that we bless and not curse as a rule of life and of communication.
The sons also of those who afflicted you shall come bowing before you, and all those who despised you shall bow themselves down at the soles of your feet; and they shall call you, The City of the Lord, the Zion of the Holy One of Israel. ISAIAH 60:14 MEV
Note that these verses refer to the last days and that they are God’s idea. People will recognise the glory of God upon His people and will show massive deference and reverence in response. The fear of God’s people will be upon the nations – yes, even those who formerly despised and afflicted us!
This ties in with a prophetic picture of the endtime Church of Philadelphia:
Listen! I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie. Listen! I will make them come and worship before your feet and to know that I have loved you. REVELATION 3:9 MEV
It’s not enough for the Lord to demonstrate His love for His true people – He will make people come and worship at our feet!
You cannot mess with God’s people. The Lord Himself has made us the head and not the tail; He has put us on top and not beneath. Sadly, too many believers are too “humble” to grasp these truths and apply them to themselves. They would rather distort them and sell off this birthright to other people. This “I am but a worm” theology is obnoxious to God and allows the evil one to make us his punchbag.
It’s time to walk in all that God has for us in these days. When people fear you, they will favour you. Much of the favour that people will be compelled to show us will stem from this fear. And it is God’s idea!
Of course, these realities should not inculcate feelings of arrogance and pride in us. They should, quite honestly, encourage us to walk in humility and reverence of God. We are not called to lord it over people; nevertheless, the reality is that God’s purpose for us is that we exercise Kingdom authority in the earth.
The day is upon us that will see God’s people exalted above all the nations and the nations will pay tribute. This is the inheritance of the seed of Abraham.
Blessed are those who bless you and cursed are those of evil intent toward you.
